Who We Are
The Peter London Global Dance Company (PLGDC), a recipient of a grant of $120,000 as part of the the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's 2011 Knight Arts Challenge is celebrating it's fifth anniversary in 2016. This grant was awarded to Peter London to develop the talents of local dancers and choreographers, and in his fifth year leading PLGDC, he has made great strides in doing so. The company, an Artist in residence since 2011 at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex (LHCC), an Arts Partner at the Adrienne Arsht Center of the Performing Arts, Miami-Dade County, since 2013 and a member of the prestigious Salon at The Betsy Hotel on Miami Beach, has blazed a lightening speed trail to critical acclaim, becoming South Florida's leading professional Multi-cultural contemporary dance company, presenting dynamic and exciting cutting edge modern dance works influenced by American classical modern dance, Classical ballet, Jazz, Native American dance , South American, Caribbean, West African and Caribbean Dance forms. "Few things bring people together like the arts, and we're excited that Peter London is creating a place for more Miamians to enjoy the talents of local dancers," said Dennis Scholl, Knight Foundation's former vice president/arts.
The Company was formed to offer an opportunity not only to train, but to retain the talent representative of the area's multicultural heritage. “South Florida has been losing its talented dancers to out-of- state companies,” said Peter London.
"As a former student of Peter London, I can say, without doubt, that he is a great teacher, coach, and mentor," said Robert Battle, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. “He is truly a great asset and treasure to the world of dance."
London's Adrienne Arsht 2015 December performances "DANCE/ING UNDER THE MISTLETOE" left audiences overwhelmed with awe and joy by the high level of performance and choreographic excellence by the PLGDC magnificent dancers and divinely creative choreographers all of whom are blazing their own trail as current or former members of international prestigious dance companies like Martha Graham Dance Company, Dance Theater of Harlem, Geneva Ballet,Switzerland ,Ballet Hispanico, AILEY II and Paul Taylor Dance Company. 2015 performances included PLGDC annual performance at ASHANTI'S Chocolate Nutcracker in Broward County, " LATIN AND CARIBBEAN DANCE FIRE" at Coral Gables Museum, "Miami Global Dance Night" at the Cuban Hebrew Temple Beth Shmuel on Miami Beach, Latin Writers Forum at the Betsy Hotel on South Beach,Miami, the annual African American Art Fund Reception at Miami's Perez Museum ( PAMM), PLGDC annual summer dance gala, "HEAT WAVE" at LHCC, special guest performance at The Federal Republic of Germany Berlin Reunification Gala, at the Biltmore Country Club, performance Collaborations with Amanda Keleey's " EXILE BOOKS" art productions and installations and many other engagements at local events, in Museums and art galleries, including MOCA, CUI Gallery, Fredrick Snitzer Gallery and Locust Project Gallery with Amanda Keeley.
PLGDC fulfills a lifelong dream for London, currently a Distinguished professor of dance at Miami-Dade College/New World School of the Arts. Many of London's former students, including Mr. Battle, Lloyd Knight, principal dancer with Martha Graham Dance Company. Vitolio Jeune with Garth Fagan Dance Company and Jamar Roberts with AILEY, have reached the pinnacle of modern dance, but have had to leave South Florida for performance experience and recognition. The Knight Foundation grant along with a generous gift from the late Victoria London, Honorary Consul of Romania ( Establishing the Victoria London annual Choreographers Showcase) provided a significant advantage during this early phase of the organization's development, widening the platform so that the community at large can begin to enjoy more of the excellent dance training, Peter London's innovative choreography and that of his former students. PLGDC is looking forward to pushing the envelope way off the table in the years ahead, as the company stands on the shoulders of its past years of creative outrageous risk taking and leans way forward for future maximum theatrical excitement and daring.
